The Road Transport Board of the Ministry of Communications and Transport institute taxi rates. This is always done in conjunction and consultation
with the Tourist Board, St. Lucia Hotels and Tourism Association (S.L.H.T.A.) and the National Taxi Council (N.T.C.). In its determination, factors such as the Cost of Living, cost of wear and tear, distance and the conditions of the roads are considered. The rates are reviewed every three to four years.
It is an offence for any tourist taxi to charge in excess of the stipulated tariff. It is also mandatory for taxi owners and drivers to conspicuously display the tariff or make it available to the passenger(s) on request. In its calculation, the Board distinguishes a basic charge for a taxi of up to three persons and luggage. Larger groups are charged on a ‘per person’ basis. Obviously, the further the destination, the higher the tariff. St. Lucian taxis are not metered.
Rates/Prices are quoted in US currency. The US dollar is equivalent to $2.70 EC, the monetary unit used by St. Lucia and the other English speaking Eastern Caribbean islands.
The main office of the Southern Taxi Association is located at
Hewanorra International Airport at the southern end of St Lucia.
